Shaniqua tried to eat me

So I've started radiology this week and it has been quite interesting. Yesterday my attending physician was not working, so my assignment was to go to the hospital's radiology viewing room and make friends with the radiologists and residents on staff that day. It didn't turn out too bad. I got there at 7:15am, about the time that the on call resident and radiologist go over plain films from the ER the night before. First off I was told not to be a douchebag next time and wear my tie and white coat; then I got to join in while they examined the films.

Two plain films I looked at were quite amusing. The first one was easy enough for me to identify. In looking at plain films and CTs you work with differentiating out five different types of densities: (From darkest/black--> to brightest/white) 1) air 2) fat 3) water/soft tissue 4) bone 5) metal. Because metal is the brightest/whitest I could tell that the patient had a bullet lodged in his head. The next patient had plain films of his leg, the area around his knee and his ankle. Around the knee were 21 little round balls also of a metallic density and 7 more around his ankle. Apparently, the patient had accidently fired off his shotgun and scattered the ball bearings into his leg. Miraculously, all of the bearings were lodged in his muscle and fat and none reached the bones to cause any damage.

The rest of the plain films were not that exciting, so I will spare the details. Around 8:00 more medical students and residents from other specialties arrived, packing the viewing room, and at 9:00 the radiology residents arrived. From here on out it was a clusterfuck, but I did manage to learn a little on vieweing MRIs from a 4th year resident.

Around noon I had to take off for didactics (which is a fancy name for lecture) at school. On my way out of the hospital I took the elevator and ran into a large ebony princess, hence the name for my blog. She was already pretty obese, but she also had a couple pounds of layers on to battle the cold weather outside. It happened to also accentuate her gargantuan form. Anyways, as she got on and the door closed she asked me, "Are you a doctor?" And I replied ever so gentlemanly like,"No I'm a medical student." She gave a funny twitch and said, "You better answer my fucking question or you're going to need to see a doctor!" At first I thought she was joking, and then I realized she had the look on her face like I was a 5-piece fried chicken meal from Church's Chicken. I was quite intimidated, any hesitation on my part to answer, and she could have easily, stopped, dropped and rolled over my small frame and crushed the life out of me. Luckily the door opened and she stumbled out before I could karate chop her to the elevator floor. I escaped unscathed and continued on my way to school.

Lecture was an immense waste of 2-hours of my life, it was about professionalism in medicine. Just look at me and this blog I write of, how much more professional can you get? For the rest of the night, I went over to Salwa's place and watched some shows with her and Dustin.

That ended day one. Day two was much better, because I was one-on-one with my attending physician at their radiologist clinic. I learned a great deal today, but after 4.5 hours in a dark room I couldn't take it anymore. I got more proficient at reading CTs and MRIs but on boobie imaging and ultrasound I still suck at it. Dookie may be out of luck, because the system they have is all digital alrady and pretty pimptastic. I'm glad I only have to work from 8-12:30 (not horrendous hours, but try staring at multiple computer screens in the dark for hours on end, I know of only one man that can really do that and his name rhymes with Gayfer). I am completely drained now and would write more but, I'm tired and hungry, besides todays cases were pretty basic and not too fantastic.

I will leave you with a metaphor for how it feels to work in radiology thus far. I'm drawing a blank for the name of that football movie...but maybe someone can figure it out. There is a scene where some football players spend all night in a strip club and when they leave the next morning, as they exit the sunlight catches them by surprise and they are a little disoriented. Radiology is kinda like that, well sort of, you are in a dark room all day examining the finer details of life and eventually when you leave the "viewing room" you get totally bewildered by the daylight. It is if you are shut off from the living world. Strange. I may just be rambling because I am delirious.

Hope all is well. Jimmy "aka" 5-piece fried chicken meal

  • I ate at Church's Chicken today with my roommate's brother but we got the 12-piece. I'm glad you have a new respect for how tough my life is. God, my life is tough. I don't know how I do it. I'm really, really tough. Anyway, the movie is Varsity Blues, duh.

  • I enjoy your blogs, better than watching scrubs...I know you may not have planned it but when do you think you will be back in Seattle? I slept on Gough's couch last weekend, except no one was having sex on the living room floor.

  • I think the next time I'll be cak in Seattle will be in April, when Mike G gets married. Other than that I don't know when I'll get the chance to come back.

No one was having sex on the floor?!? Not even Davis?!?
